Thema
Sinds enkele jaren koppelt het NSO het jaarlijkse project aan een eigen thema. Zo kan ieder jaar een project gevormd worden met een unieke identiteit en verbindt het thema als rode draad de programmering en artistieke samenwerking per project tot een uniek geheel.
NSO 2024 zal in het teken staan van het thema: ‘Laat je horen!’
‘Laat je horen!’ is een aansporing om je uit te spreken; en dat in de overtuiging dat jouw geluid gehoord mag worden. Dat kan met woorden, met stem, maar juist ook met muziek. Alleen is dit niet altijd voor iedereen vanzelfsprekend. Zo hebben vrouwen binnen de klassieke muziek lange tijd een achtergestelde positie gehad. NSO 2024 geeft hier klank aan en staat dit jaar in het teken van ‘Laat je horen!’
Het NSO speelt in februari 2024 een opdrachtcompositie van Sílvia Lanao, waarin zij liederen van Alma Mahler bewerkt die door sopraan Lilian Farahani worden vertolkt. Alma was een muzikale, ambitieuze, jonge componiste die zich op haar 18e afvroeg waarom vrouwen niets hadden gepresteerd in de muziek. Zij zou daar verandering in brengen. Maar toen Gustav Mahler om haar hand vroeg, verbood hij haar nog te componeren. Ze stemde in en stopte haar muzikale carrière. Alma liet zich toen het zwijgen opleggen, terwijl de opdrachtcomponist van NSO 2024 haar muziek nu wel laat horen.
Het thema ‘Laat je horen!’ heeft ook betrekking op Symfonie nr. 5 van Mahler. Hoewel het na het ‘liefdescontract’ tussen Gustav en Alma lastig te geloven is, koesterden de twee componisten een grote liefde voor elkaar. Het vierde deel van Mahlers vijfde symfonie, het Adagietto, is een liefdesbrief aan Alma. Hij kon zijn liefde voor haar niet vatten in woorden, maar alleen in muziek laten horen.
Met een vrouwelijke solist, een vrouwelijke opdrachtcomponist en een centrale rol voor de liederen van Alma Mahler in de opdrachtcompositie heeft het Nederlands Studenten Orkest in 2024 een emancipatoir karakter. Stemmen die in de klassieke muziekwereld nog steeds te weinig klinken, laten wij horen.

Over/About
De Nederlandse dirigent Frans-Aert Burghgraef is een jonge dirigent met zowel een nationale als internationale carrière. Hij stond al één keer eerder voor het Nederlands Studenten Orkest in 2021. Die editie gaat de boeken in als corona-editie en NSO 2024 zal dus de eerste ‘normale’ NSO-tournee worden die Frans-Aert voor zijn rekening neemt.
The Dutch conductor Frans-Aert Burghgraef is a young conductor with a national and international career. Once before, he conducted the Nederlands Studenten Orkest. In 2021 he conducted the special covid edition of NSO so in 2024 Frans-Aert will have his first ‘normal’ NSO experience.
Opleiding/Studies
Frans-Aert Burghgraef studeerde orkestdirectie aan de conservatoria van Groningen en Utrecht. Uit een internationale selectie van tweehonderd dirigenten werd hij uitgenodigd om deel te nemen aan een masterclass met maestro Bernhard Haitink, als onderdeel van het gerenommeerde Lucerne Festival. Maestro Edo de Waart selecteerde hem om een concert te leiden met Antwerp Symphony Orchestra. September 2018 werd de heer Burghgraef toegelaten tot een zeer gewilde masterclass met Dima Slobodeniouk en zijn Orquesta Sinfónica de Galicia in A Coruña.
Frans-Aert Burghgraef studied orchestral conducting at the conservatoires of Groningen and Utrecht. From an international selection of two hundred conductors he was invited to attend a masterclass with maestro Bernhard Haitink, as part of the renowned Lucerne Festival. Maestro Edo de Waart selected him to conduct a concert with Antwerp Symphony Orchestra. September 2018 Mr. Burghgraef was admitted to a much sought after masterclass with Dima Slobodeniouk and his Orquesta Sinfónica de Galicia in A Coruña.
Engagementen/Engagements
Vanaf het begin van zijn dirigeer-carrière in 2014 dirigeerde Frans-Aert Burghgraef bijna alle Nederlandse symfonieorkesten, zoals Rotterdams Philharmonisch Orkest, Radio Filharmonisch Orkest, Noord Nederlands Orkest, Nederlands Philharmonisch Orkest, Philharmonie ZuidNederland, Residentie Orkest, en Phion. Zijn internationale engagementen omvatten St. Petersburg State Symphony Orchestra, Luzern Symphony Orchestra, Orquesta Sinfónica de Galicia en het assisteren van James Gaffigan in La Fanciulla del West bij de Bayerische Staatsoper. Van 2015 tot 2018 werkte Frans-Aert Burghgraef als assistent-dirigent bij het Radio Filharmonisch Orkest. In die hoedanigheid assisteerde hij chef-dirigent maestro Markus Stenz, evenals gastdirigenten als David Zinman, Edo de Waart, James Gaffigan, Vasily Petrenko, Kevin John Edusei, Dima Slobodeniouk, Sir Mark Elder, Martyn Brabbins, Edward Gardner en Bernard Haitink. Burghgraef dirigeerde het orkest in 2019 in de première-opname van Hans Kox’ Symfonie nr. 6. In 2021 dirigeerde hij het Nederlands Studenten Orkest in een serie concerten rondom Wagner’s Der Ring des Nibelungen en in januari 2022 debuteerde hij in de serie Zaterdagmatinee, waarin hij het Radio Filharmonisch Orkest dirigeerde in een Nederlandse première van het Hoorn Concert van Hans Abrahamsen. In oktober 2023 is Frans-Aert Burghgraef benoemd tot chef-dirigent van de Koninklijke Militaire Kapel ‘Johan Willem Friso’.
From the start of his conducting career in 2014 Mr. Burghgraef conducted almost all Dutch symphony orchestras, such as Rotterdam Philharmonic, Netherlands Radio Philharmonic, North Netherlands Symphony Orchestra, Netherlands Philharmonic Orchestra, South Netherlands Philharmonic, The Hague Philharmonic Orchestra, and Phion. His international engagements include St. Petersburg State Symphony Orchestra, Luzern Symphony Orchestra, Orquesta Sinfónica de Galicia, and assisting James Gaffigan in La Fanciulla del West with the Bayerische Staatsoper. 2015-2018 Mr. Burghgraef’s worked as assistant conductor with Netherlands Radio Philharmonic Orchestra. January 2022 Mr. Burghgraef conducted the Netherlands Radio Philharmonic in his debut at the renowned series “Zaterdagmatinee”, conducting the Dutch premiere of Hans Abrahamsen’s Horn Concerto with Stefan Dohr. In the summer of 2021 he conducted music from Wagner’s Ring des Nibelungen in a series of concerts with Netherlands Student Orchestra. 2023 he will conduct Rotterdam Philharmonic Orchestra, 2024 he will again conduct Netherlands Student Orchestra. As of October 2023 Frans-Aert Burghgraef is appointed chief conductor at the Royal Military Band ‘Johan Willem Friso’ (KMKJWF).
Prijzen en beurzen/Awards and grants
Maestro Burghgraef ontving in januari 2015 de eerste prijs in de gerenommeerde Taipei International Conducting Competition. Voorzitter van de jury was de illustere Finse dirigent, coach en talentscout Jorma Panula. Na de wedstrijd werd de heer Burghgraef uitgenodigd om het Chinese orkest van Taipei in mei 2017 te dirigeren. In december 2015 ontving Frans-Aert in het Amsterdamse Concertgebouw de prestigieuze Kersjes Directie Prijs. Deze belangrijke driejarige beurs ter grootte van € 15.000 voor talentontwikkeling is vernoemd naar de illustere Nederlandse dirigent en supporter van jong talent Anton Kersjes.
January 2015 maestro Burghgraef was awarded the first prize in the renowned Taipei International Conducting Competition. Chairman of the jury was the illustrious Finnish conductor, coach and scout Jorma Panula. Following the competition Mr. Burghgraef was invited to conduct the Taipei Chinese Orchestra in May 2017. December 2015 FransAert received in the Amsterdam Concertgebouw the prestigious Kersjes Conducting Grant. This important € 15.000,- three year talent development grant is named after the illustrious Dutch conductor and advocate of young talent Anton Kersjes.

De Nederlands-Iraanse sopraan Lilian Farahani heeft met haar jonge leeftijd al veel klassieke operarollen op haar naam staan. De operaster heeft met toonaangevende orkesten in binnen- en buitenland gezongen. Naast het klassieke werk schuwt ze hedendaagse composities niet. Lilian zal met het Nederlands Studenten Orkest liederen van Alma Mahler ten gehore brengen in de opdrachtcompositie van de hand van Sílvia Lanao.
Dutch-Iranian soprano Lilian Farahani is a young singer who has sung classical opera roles and played the most beautiful, Dutch stages. The opera star has worked with leading Dutch and international orchestra’s. In addition to classical pieces, she also sings contemporary works. With the Nederlands Studenten Orkest, Lilian will perform songs written by Alma Mahler in Sílvia Lanao’s commissioned piece.

Lilian studeerde cum laude met onderscheiding af aan het Koninklijk Conservatorium in Den Haag en de Dutch National Opera Academy in Amsterdam.

Engagementen
In de afgelopen jaren zong Lilian op de grote Nederlandse podia bij gezelschappen als De Nationale Opera, Opera Zuid en de Nederlandse Reisopera, maar ook aan de operahuizen van Nancy, Bern, Essen, het Festival d’Aix-en-Provence en de Internationale Maifestspiele Wiesbaden. In 2023 maakte ze haar debuut bij het Royal Opera House in Londen. Op haar repertoire staan Mozart-rollen als Pamina (‘Zauberflöte’), Despina (‘Così fan tutte’), Zerlina (‘Don Giovanni’) en Susanna (‘Le nozze di Figaro’). Maar ook rollen als Lauretta (‘Gianni Schicchi’), Elvira (‘L’ítaliana in Algeri’), Gretel (‘Hänsel und Gretel’), Carolina (‘Il matrimonio segreto’), Musetta (‘La bohème’) en Frasquita (‘Carmen’).
Lilian werkte met onder meer het Concertgebouw Orkest, het Residentie Orkest, het Orkest van de Achttiende Eeuw, Ensemble Pygmalion, London Symphony Orchestra, het Nederlands Philharmonisch Orkest, het Nederlands Blazersensemble, het Orkest van het Oosten, Essener Philharmoniker, het Nederlands Kamerorkest en leden van het Rotterdam Philharmonisch Orkest.
In recent years, Lilian has sung on the major Dutch stages with companies such as Dutch National Opera, Opera Zuid and Dutch Touring Opera, but also in the opera houses of Nancy, Bern, Essen, the Festival d’Aix-en-Provence and the International Maifestspiele Wiesbaden. In 2023, she made her Royal Opera House debut in London. Hedendaags repertoire / Contemporary repertoire
Naast opera, operette en het klassieke liedrepertoire heeft Lilian veel affiniteit met hedendaagse composities: naast ‘Innocence’ van Saariaho, zong ze hoofdrollen in ‘Anne en Zef’ van Monique Krüs, ‘Death Knocks’ (Christian Jost) en ‘Een helse komedie’ van Michael Sturminger bij het Nationale Toneel. In het voorjaar 2019 verscheen haar debuut-CD ‘Woman – the making of…’ met werken van de Amerikaan Jake Heggie in samenwerking met pianist Maurice Lammerts van Bueren.
Besides opera, operette and the classical repertoire of Lieder, Lilian feels at home singing contemporary works. Besides Saariaho’s ‘Innocence’, she sang leading roles in ‘Anne and Zef’ by Monique Krüs, Death Knocks’ (Christian Jost) and ‘The infernal comedy’ by Michael Sturminger with the Dutch National Theater. In the spring of 2019, her debut CD ‘Woman – the making of…’ with works of Jake Heggie, was released, along with pianist Maurice Lammerts van Bueren.

Sílvia Lanao Aregay heeft speciaal voor het Nederlands Studenten Orkest 2024 Ein Glück Ohne Ruh gecomponeerd. Hierin zijn 4 liederen van Alma Mahler opgenomen. Daarbij schreef ze een orkestrale inleiding en zette ze zelf het werk van Alma voort in het laatste lied van het stuk.
About
The composer Sílvia Lanao Aregay (1995, Spain) started her interest and passion for music at a very young age. Music composition was a natural result of her musical practice and soon would become the main motivation in her career. For the Nederlands Studenten Orkest Sílvia was commissioned to compose a piece for orchestra and soprano with songs by Alma Mahler at the center.
Studies
In 2014 Sílvia graduated from Conservatori Isaac Albéniz (Girona), where she specialized in classical piano performance. That same year she moved to Barcelona where she started composition at Conservatori del Liceu. There, she received lessons from Benet Casablancas, Ramon Humet and Israel David Martínez. In 2015, she participated in the International Composition Course, organized by BarcelonaModern Project and Damian Luna; lectures were given by Hèctor Parra. In 2016, she attended a masterclass with Kaija Saariaho at ESMUC, and with George Benjamin at Conservatori del Liceu.
In 2016 she moved to Amsterdam where she completed her bachelor in composition at Conservatorium van Amsterdam with Wim Henderickx and Willem Jeths. During her studies in Amsterdam, she received lessons from several guest teachers including Rebecca Saunders and Trevor Wishart amongst others.
In 2021 Silvia finished her master’s degree in musical composition at the Conservatorium van Amsterdam with Richard Ayres and Jorrit Tamminga. She expanded her musical skills by composing electronic music and taking a deeper insight into instrumental and orchestral composition.
Engagements
In 2017, she was selected to participate in the first edition of the TimesAcademy, organized by the Belgian ensemble, HermesEnsemble, which resulted in the premiere of the piece Touch and Hearing at the concert hall Amuz in Antwerpen, Belgium. In the same year, her piece Nit, for symphonic orchestra, was premiered in Muziekgebouw aan t’IJ by the orchestra of the Conservatorium van Amsterdam and Matthew Rowe as the conductor.
Compositions and activities
Sílvia has a passion for multi-sensory musical performance. In 2019 she designed the performance Synaesthesia, a one-hour musical experience in which the music is the guideline for a journey through the different senses, except the sense of sight.
Sílvia was selected as a resident composer with the Canadian based string quartet Quatuor Bozzini for Composer’s Kitchen 2020. Due to COVID reasons, the residency with the Canadian string quartet took place in 2021. That lead to the premiere of the piece ¿Friends?, during the Gaudeamus music festival celebrated at TivoliVredenbug in Utrecht, NL.
Silvia was part of one on the 4 teams, called the OFFSprings, which were a set of 4 projects commissioned by the Dutch National Opera & Ballet, to encourage the creation of opera by young professionals during the pandemic. The resulting product is In Nabijheid a performance that explores the possibilities of opera in a context of social inclusiveness.
Sílvia has recently participated in the creation of Lillith Ensemble’s first CD. She was commissioned to compose a piece for the core members of the ensemble and she could add instrumentalists at her own wish. For that occasion she composedElgdans.
Style
Her works are rich immersions in colour and texture. In her music, she explores the different timbre possibilities of instruments, to achieve unique musical textures. The goal of building such textures and colours is to create an atmosphere for the audience, a musical “world” in which people can dive in during the performance. Sílvia believes one of the reasons why we like to listen to music is that it allows us to have experiences which are only possible through sound.
